The icebreaker and conference will take place on the Penryn campus of the University of Exeter (see downloadable map below). Parking is available on campus.
Parking is available on campus (at a rate of £6 per day) and at most hotels and B&Bs in Falmouth.
For the campus, alight at Penryn train station. There is a 15 minute walk up the hill through the University gardens to reach the venue.
National bus links are available to Truro. Local bus connections are then available from Truro to Falmouth, via the University campus (U1). There are good regular bus links between Falmouth/Penryn and the University campus.
The nearest airport is Newquay Airport. This has good flights connecting to London, Mancester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Dublin and Cork, to name a few. The public transport connections to and from Newquay Airport are limited.
If travelling through Newquay Airport, you will need to consider either hiring a car or booking a group taxi.
We are looking into providing bus/minibus links to and from Newquay Airport but this is subject to availability. Please indicate if you’re likely to fly to/from Newquay and would be interested in organised transport to/from the airport by ticking the survey box below. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to provide transport at this stage, but should interest by wide enough we may be able to assist.
There are a variety of hotels and B&B’s available at very reasonable rates in January. We recommend that you aim to stay in Falmouth or Penryn as these are closest to events for the conference and have good travel links to the University campus.
We have negotiated a discounted room rate at The Royal Duchy Hotel in Falmouth (TR11 4NX). This is the same venue as the conference dinner. There are 45 rooms available for the night of the 3rd January (evening of the conference dinner). If you wish to stay for both the nights of 2nd and 3rd January, 36 rooms are available at the discounted rate. Book soon if you wish to take up this offer and cite “MDSG2019” to access the discounted rate (via phone or email to the hotel).
Discounted room rate: £50 pppn (includes bed & breakfast and access to the pool)
There are several bus routes connecting Falmouth with the university campus. Be aware that most leave from Falmouth Moor – a good 15-25 minute walk depending on which hotel you’re staying in. Please refer to the Local Transport Map and the bus timetable links for each route.
There are regular bus routes from Falmouth towards Truro (U1) and Redruth (U2) that go via the university campus (ask for ‘Penryn Campus’). The U1 and U2 buses depart from Falmouth Moor (see Local Transport Map) every 10-20 minutes. Travel time is approximately 15 minutes.
The bus route U3 services Falmouth to Penryn Campus only – this route mostly departs from Falmouth Moor (every 5-15 minutes) but can also depart from Falmouth Hotel (via Woodlane and Falmouth Moor) up until 0805. Journey time from Falmouth Hotel is approximately 30 minutes. Journey time from Falmouth Moor is about 15 minutes.
There are several train stations in Falmouth:
These all run along the Falmouth Branch line and will go via Penryn train station. Travel time is 5-11 minutes. Trains run every 30 minutes.
For the university campus, alight at Penryn station and walk up the hill (via the tree lined gardens – see Local Transport Map) for about 10-15 minutes.
If you don’t fancy the walk up the hill you could catch the U1 or U2 bus instead (or call a taxi).
